Museum after Hours: "Freedom Riders" Film and Discussion

The Missouri State Museum will present the film, “Freedom Riders” and a discussion led by Thomas Gubbels,  Ph.D., Lincoln University. This program continues the museum’s ongoing series, “Museum After Hours,” held the first Wednesday of each month. While Museum galleries will remain open until 9 p.m., the program for this month will be presented in the T.D. Pawley Theater, Martin Luther King Hall, Lincoln University, 812 E. Dunklin. To mark the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s March on Washington and to introduce four documentaries with riveting new footage illustrating the history of civil rights in America, the Missouri State Museum will offer a series of screenings and discussions centered around four documentaries on the Lincoln University campus in Jefferson City, Mo. The Created Equal film set is made possible through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Missouri’s annual Child Advocacy Day is an opportunity for parents, child care professionals, health care providers, and community members to speak up and ask lawmakers to make the health, safety, and education of Missouri’s children a top priority for the state. Activities at Child Advocacy Day include:

  • Workshops on current legislative and budget issues affecting children and families
  • Meetings with legislators
  • March to the Capitol and Rally
  • Exhibits showcasing services for children and families
  • Recognition of this year’s Child Advocate Award winner(s)

Please join the MO Alliance for Children, Youth, and Families for the 32nd Annual Child Advocacy Day in Jefferson City on April 1st, 2014.

MISSOURI’S CHILDREN:

  • 268,000 live in poverty, 107,000 under the age of 6 live in poverty
  • More than 100,000 lack health insurance
  • 320,000 are alone after school
  • 10,000 drop out of school
  • 7,000 are abused & neglected
  • 310,000 under 6 need child care

Let Missouri lawmakers know:
