JCMO Local Foods, Local Places Workshop
Tue, 28 Apr 2015 17:30:00 +0000
Downtown Jefferson City and partners are hosting a two-day community workshop on local foods and strengthening the local economy, creating healthy communities and shaping our place locally.
A team of federal agency partners have selected Jefferson City for a technical assistance program that will result in an action plan for strengthening the local food economy. A team of these agency partners and their consultants will join local stakeholders to conduct a local workshop. Your participation and knowledge of the area is needed to help make this event a success. Attached are an overview of the Local Foods, Local Places program and a copy of the Letter of Interest submitted by the Downtown Jefferson City for this assistance and workshop effort.
The primary purpose of the workshop is to create an action plan that clearly identifies priorities, next steps, and roles and responsibilities around the following goal areas:
1. Create a successful and vibrant farmers market downtown that will increase local opportunities for local farmers, increase sales at the market, increase visitors and vendors.
2. Coordinate between existing markets regionally.
3. Develop criteria and weigh options for a permanent site for the Lincoln Farmers Market in downtown area
4. Explore ways, linkages, and actions to increase food access to downtown areas and neighborhoods
The workshop will include presentations on community livability and the role that local food plays in supporting it, plus small group working sessions and discussions on the community’s vision and goals, and specific actions for reaching them. The workshop will lay out an action plan for moving forward.
- Evening Session: Tuesday, April 28, 2015, 5:30–8:00 PM at 217 Adams St. Session focuses on vision and values and “where are we now, where do we want to be?” It will include overview and informational presentations as well as group exercises and discussion.
- Action Planning Work Sessions: Wednesday, April 29, 2015, 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM –5:00 PM at 217 Adams St. . Morning session focuses on evaluating what we want to happen and what are our primary challenges and opportunities, as well as developing an inventory of actions and strategies that need to happen. The afternoon session will continue the work of action planning in small group exercises focused on detailing specifics of “what do we want to happen and how do we make it happen?” There will be additional case study presentations given during these two half day sessions.
Your participation and knowledge of Jefferson City and the region, its local food systems, unique culture, economy, and vitality are needed to help make this event a success.
We look forward to seeing you there!
